Vertical above-ground storage tanks used for storage of viscous oil products (including road bitumens) are manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the Russian National Standard 31385-2008 “Vertical cylindrical steel storage tanks for oil and oil products. General specification”.

The design of the storage tank should meet a number of requirements including the following: to endure external exposure (wind, snow and other environmental exposures), to ensure corrosion resistance, to stay stable and reliable within the design service life.

The most commonly used heating systems are oil and electric ones. For storage of viscous oil road bitumens vertical steel storage tanks with a fixed roof are used. To preserve energy in the process of preliminary heating the storage tanks are thermally insulated taking into account actual operating conditions. Calculation of thermal insulation is carried out taking into account provisions of the Sanitary Regulation 61.13330.2012 “Thermal insulation of equipment and pipelines” by the normalized density of the heat flow, by the set value of the heat flow or by the set temperature on the insulation surface.

Vertical storage tanks with the oil heating system usually have three independent preheaters: a common bottom one, a wall-mounted one and a local one in the area of the intake manifold. Dimensions of storage tanks may be changed according to the requirements of the Customer. 

The layout diagram of the preheater’s pipes and the area of oil heating coils are important determinants of the time of reaching the steady-state mode of bitumen output and of the output of the bitumen storage facility per shift.   

For storage facilities with the volume from 1,000 m3 with the oil heating system a number of technical solutions were suggested ensuring significant reduction of the beginning of the storage facility’s operational life, preservation of quality of the binder in the process of heating and significant reduction of costs during operation of the bitumen storage facility.

An efficient solution for heating of bitumen with the help of electric heaters is to use cut-in bitumen heaters. Heating elements are usually located by groups of two with displacement by 120о or 90о. The design of heaters ensures efficient heating without overheating (carbonization) of the binder due to the double-loop automation system ensuring control of both temperature of the heated media (bitumen) and heaters. Such approach ensures long service life of the engine. However, in the event of failure of heating elements only reduction of installed capacity occurs, and replacement of failed elements does not require discharge of bitumen from the storage tank.
